Ursela (Prieto)

I represent Ursela, a negra woman enslaved in the household of Maria Prieto Quigles. At the time of the changing of the flags in 1821, I would have been about 33 years old. In an 1826 bill of sale in which Maria Prieto Quigles sold me to Luis Maestre, she describes me as the same slave she purchased from Don Felipe Prieto in 1811. By 1826, I had three mulato children: Pedro, about 9; Josefina about 3, and Genoveva, about 5 months old. She sold all four of us for $1,100. Researchers are still investigating whether I am the same woman as Ursula (Quigles).
