William McVoy

I represent William McVoy, Jr. I was born in Pensacola in 1776. I appear in the 1784 census of Pensacola in the household of my widowed mother, Elizabeth, along with three of my siblings.

I led an adventurous life; in my 1817 request for a land grant, it recounts that “Governor Folch sent him to the District of Tensas to observe the movements of the Insurgents, the Kemper brothers and followers, when in the year 1810 they attempted an attack upon this Town, and having been upon the point of being killed by them. And he also accompanied Captain Don Benigno Garcia Calderon in March 1817 on a reconnaissance to the American Boundary Line …”

I do not appear in the 1820 census, which is a bit mysterious as my family had a long history in the area. In 1838 I married Josefa (Josephine) Hernandez. I am buried in St. Michael’s Cemetery.
