Ana Simeona (“Nannette”) Marchand

I represent Ana Simeona Marchand, a mulata girl enslaved in the household of Jacques Sorbies. I was baptized by Father Coleman at St. Michael’s on February 17, 1821, a few weeks after my birth. My mother was Rosalia, a mulata woman enslaved in the same household. I was born into slavery by virtue of her enslaved status. My father was a man named Pedro (perhaps Pierre) Marchand, whom researchers have not yet identified.

An 1824 deed guaranteed my manumission upon the death of Maria Vellon, the wife of Jacques Sorbies; though she was to enjoy my services during her lifetime, I was to be freed upon her death and she could not sell me.
