I represent Bautista Ariola, a pardo boy, 9 years old at the time of the 1820 census of Pensacola. I was the son of Cristobal Ariola, an Italian carpenter, and Dorotea, a free morena woman. Families of mixed ethnicity like ours were quite common in Spanish West Florida, as the Spanish did not have the same social taboos as Anglo-American society. I was born in Louisiana, like my mother and had 3 siblings. We also shared our home with a free negra named Elena Amberg whose relationship to us is not specified.
