I represent Carlos, a free boy of color born to Ana Goumarin, a free negra woman from Charleston, South Carolina. I was baptized by Father Coleman at St. Michael’s on February 18, 1821, a couple of months after my birth. My baptismal record is a bit odd: In 1820, my mother lived with a French cigar maker named Joseph Alexandre Goumarin, and they had three children together whom he acknowledged as his “natural children.” In my baptismal record, however, my father is listed as no conocido (unknown), which usually means the man either did not want or was unable to acknowledge a child. Joseph also does not acknowledge me in his will. So there is a chance I was not his son, and it is unknown at the moment whether or not my mother continued sharing his household after the 1820 census.
