I represent Andrew Jackson Donelson. Not to be confused with Andrew Jackson, Jr., I was the ward of General Andrew Jackson and the son of Rachel Donelson Jackson‘s brother, Samuel Donelson. I graduated from West Point in 1820, second in my class. General Jackson asked me to join him in New Orleans in February 1821 as war with Spain seemed imminent, but when General Jackson accepted the governorship of Florida, he had me join him there in July. I was his aide-de-camp. After Jackson’s resignation, I finished my law studies and took over the running of The Hermitage in Tennessee while General Jackson pursued his political career. After Jackson’s presidency, I continued to act as his secretary and right-hand man until his death, after which I moved to Memphis and practiced law until my death in 1871.
