Maria Andrea (Ruby)

I represent Maria Andrea, a free girl of color born into the household of Salvador Ruby, a free man of color in Pensacola. I was baptized by Father Coleman at St. Michael’s on January 1, 1820, at which time Salvador signed the record to confirm my freedom – despite my having been born into slavery by virtue of the status of my mother, Carlota, a negra woman enslaved in Salvadors’ household. My father is listed as no conocido (unknown) but that usually means that the man either did not want or was not able to acknowledge me.
