I represent George Walton, Jr., son of George Walton and Dorothy Camber Walton. I was born in Augusta, Georgia in 1789. In 1821, I was practicing as an attorney and was recommended to fill a post in the new American government that Andrew Jackson was setting up for the Territory of West Florida. He appointed me as Secretary, so I went to Pensacola, where I arrived on July 31, 1821 – just days after the exchange of flags. My mother accompanied me. When Andrew Jackson left Florida, I took over as acting Governor of the Territory. I was married to Sarah (“Sally”) Minge Walker Walton. Walton County, Florida, is named for me. I lived a rather colorful life, evading death from both yellow fever in 1822 and a duel in 1829. I served as Mayor of Mobile but also ran into a bit of trouble because I was terrible with money. I died in 1863 in Virginia.
